Let Toys Be Toys is recruiting volunteers to help run our Toymark good practice scheme. Could you help us?
Let Toys Be Toys runs a good practice scheme where we award shops who do not use any gender signs or descriptions to market their toys or books with a Toymark award.
We are currently seeking new UK-based unpaid volunteers to join our team to help out with our Toymark scheme.
Working in a small team with other Toymark volunteers, your tasks will include some or all of the following:
- Using social media to announce nominations and promote winners
- Seeking out and nominating potential Toymark candidates
- Tracking store nominations and awards in our Toymark database
- Assessing online shops using the agreed criteria
- Contacting nominated shops by phone or email to discuss their nomination
- Awarding successful shops and announcing on social media
We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with a commitment to our campaign goals. To be successful in this role, you will need:
- A minimum commitment of 3 hours a week for six months (to be worked at any time of the day or night convenient to you)
- Regular access to a computer and the internet
- Good working knowledge of Facebook, Twitter, Word, Excel and email systems
- Willingness to embrace the use of Facebook as the Toymark project work is wholly organised on Facebook pages
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn to use file-sharing software
- For the shop liaison roles: confidence as well as a professional and friendly manner for contacting retailers and providing feedback to them about their shops
- Enthusiasm to grow the Toymark scheme and be a part of it being successful, as well as the Let Toys Be Toys campaign as a whole
Most importantly, the ability to get along with others and work as part of a team making collective decisions is essential.
In return, we offer the chance to work on an exciting campaign and develop new skills as an activist, with the potential for keen and committed volunteers to grow the role and work on other projects. We will be pleased to provide future references to volunteers who successfully fulfil the minimum time commitment and show dedication to the role.

Let Toys Be Toys is a feminist social media campaign calling for retailers and publishers to stop gender stereotyping children’s toys and books by labelling them as ‘for girls’ or ‘for boys’, and let the children have the freedom to decide for themselves what they want to read and play with.
The campaign started at the end of the 2012, and has seen many successes so far, including 14 major UK retailers agreeing to remove the gendered signs from their stores, and 10 major publishers also agreeing to stop publishing books with gendered labels in the title. Let Toys Be Toys receives regular international media coverage for our campaigning work.
Our campaign group is made up entirely of unpaid volunteers, and we fit our campaign duties around family responsibilities and paid work. We meet, organise, and run the campaign wholly on social media.
It is an exciting time for Let Toys Be Toys, and we have many plans to take the campaign in new directions, and well as to grow and develop our existing campaigns and projects, particularly Toymark.
